The dizzying aroma of roasting coffee beans welcomes you in from the cold (what? It can totally be 30 degrees in Duluth in May). The clean, industrial space both modern and welcoming. Owner Eric Faust’s passion for good, accessible coffee runs deep, and it shows. Serving some of the most balanced, delicate cappuccinos in the region, Duluth Coffee Company also sells their coffee beans to-go.

There may be a line winding out the door of this Lilliputian deli, also located in DeWitt Seitz, but the wait is worth it. Don’t let the long-winded name confuse you. Sara’s Table offers simple, wholesome fare they call “local cuisine with a conscience”. What the diner is lacking in scenery, it makes up for in farm-to-fork dishes like a miso and mushroom ciabatta with King oyster mushrooms, miso mayo, sunflower seed sprouts, radish pickle, and edamame. A weekend special might include pasta with local fiddlehead fern, prosciutto, and red peppers in a white wine brown butter sauce.

Across the hall, Lake Avenue Café offers unique dishes in a sun-drenched space. Innovative small plates include marrow toast with seasonal pickled onion, and poached egg, charred shish*to peppers or a daily ceviche presentation.
