WHY IS ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP DANGEROUS?
- Kills both good and bad bacteria.
- Full of chemicals that are just bad for you.Endocrine disruption. No good.
- Can create antibiotic resistance. We know that’s not good.
- They aren’t even effective from what I’ve read.
There are some natural ways to kill bacteria (essential oils that are antibacterial) when we want to kill the bad kid germs and clean our hands before we eat.
DOES THIEVES ESSENTIAL OIL ACTUALLY KILL BACTERIA?
I am not a scientist nor can I claim something like that. But I do believe that it helps our immunity and I have researched its effectiveness here on Dr. Annie’s Experiment blog. She does a wonderful job of testing Thieves Essential Oil and according to her….it works!

#1. CONTAINER FOR SOAP
You could reuse an old plastic container but I don’t recommend that.
***This is MY NEW FAVORITE FOAMING HAND SOAP DISPENSER!It’s easy for kids to use and the top doesn’t get gross. #momwin
IF YOU DON’T WANT AUTOMATIC, this is my other favorite right now. You can find it here.
MY OLD SYSTEM: I do love a good mason jar!!! This was my first system usingthese lids. You can use any size mason jars. I have some soap containers that are32 oz jars & some 16 oz jars in different bathrooms. High traffic bathrooms I tend to use larger jars. I believe these jars are shown in my photo with the lid. Check them out in blackalso. They never clogged but the white did start to look dirty over time in the grooves.
NOT RECOMMENDED. I tried these pretty containers and hated them after a few months. They clogged. They put out funny suds but not a foam. I ended up getting rid of them when I got the mason jar lids.
#2 AMAZING SOAP
I LOVE LOVE LOVE DR. BRONNER’S LIQUID CASTILE SOAP!!!
I have been using it to bathe the children, make foaming hand sanitizers and hand soaps for years. You can also use this as your children’s (or your) bath soap! Read about that here!Side note….Did you know there were so many scents of Castile soap? I have to try them all now….
- Baby Mild Unscented
- Almond[new favorite!!!]
- Tea Tree [might work as antibacterial without adding your own EOs]
- Lavender
- Rose [dying to know what this one smells like]
- Citrus [sounds like it would be nice in the kitchen?]
- Peppermint [warning: in body soap watch out for sensitive bits with this one. Yikes! I won’t tell you how I learned that lesson! ]
- 5 piece gift set including 4 oz of each. Great gift idea! Almond, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lavender and Peppermint.
#3 WATER
I use tap water or better yet…use your Berkey water!
#4 OILS (OPTIONAL)
Almond Oil or Light Olive Oil. I admit I’m often too lazy to finish this step so you’ll have to let me know if you like it.
Essential Oils. [optional] I add Young Living Thieves [for antibacterial qualities] and Young Living Peppermint [to smell nice with the Thieves and to copy the Thieves Hand Sanitizer recipe combination]
MY LOVE OF CASTILE SOAP. IS IT SAFE?
Castile Soap is amazing. Lately,I am in LOVE with this Dr. Bronner’s Almond Castile Soap! The almond smells divine (like an almond dessert….have you ever smelled almond extract?!) and leaves my hands soft. I love it.
Castile soap is made from oils, like coconut oil, olive oil and hemp oil. EWG RATING.And it can be used to clean so many things. It’s so cheap and can be used for so much. It makes my life easier.
MY LOVE OF MASON JARS.
I use mason jars for EV.ERY.THING. now. I’ll post on that later. (SIGN UP TO STAY IN TOUCH TO GET THOSE UPDATES!) I had a little meltdown recently while moving and was unpacking glasses. Short glasses. Tall glasses. Wine glasses. Glasses. Why do I have so many glasses? I wondered. Well, you guessed it. I don’t anymore. I ONLY HAVE MASON JARS. No seriously. ONLY mason jars. You come to my house and want a beverage. You’ll be drinking from a mason jar. If you want a wine glass, you’ll have to bring your own. Ok, I do still have coffee cups. I’m not totally insane. Just a little. Ok back to the soap….in a mason jar…
If you know me, even through my blog, you know how much I LOVE DYPER bamboo diapers. Their customer service is top notch. Their diapers are SAFE (#1 priority) and for me, the fact that they don’t smell is TOP of my list also. Oh…also they WORK! When I love a company, I always check out their other products. And I am in love with this new dispenser for all of my homemade bath and hand soaps!

DIY FOAMING SOAP RECIPE – HOW TO MAKE FOAMING FOAM HAND SOAP
There are plenty of recipes and you can experiment with the ratio you like. Here’s my favorite recipe. Super simple. Don’t dirty any measuring spoons or cups. Just start mixing. It’s easier and more fun that way!
- a little less than 4/5 of your container – WATER
- add slowly so you don’t suds too much if you have or have had soap in container
- a little less than 1/5 of your container – YOUR FAVORITE CASTILE SOAP
- [See info above on scents].
- 1-2 t of oil approximately & optionally (almond oil or light olive oil)
- 20 drops of Essential Oils.
- Start with 10-20 drops (depending on size of container) and experiment with what you like.
- I prefer a 2 to 1 ratio of Peppermint to Thieves if I add both. (Example. 10 drops of Thieves. 20 drops of Peppermint.
- Start with less and add more. Too many essential oils can burn your hands, especially in the winter or with chapped or cut hands.
- Leave Space in dispenser for hand soap dispenser top if there is a cavity for air.
DIY FOAMING SOAP RECIPE WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
It’s so easy. It’s so simple. It’s so inexpensive.
- Add approx 1/5 castile soap container by grabbing the bottle and giving a quick squirt by eyeballing approx 1/5 of container.
- Add water to fill the rest of container with water slowly so it doesn’t suds too much. Leave room at the top for the dispenser lid.
- DONE. and DONE.
- Lately {summertime} I’m only adding castile soap and water. That’s all. No essential oils. When school starts and winter rolls around and I become terrified of kid germs and sicknesses, I’ll start adding essential oils back into my soap containers.
- See how many essential oils I add above.
WILL THIS RECIPE SAVE MONEY?
Absolutely.
Foaming soap uses so much less soap…it’s ridiculous.
It also saves time. Who has time to lather their own soap? LOL.
Other recipes for DIY Foaming Hand Soap even call for less soap than my recipe above.( 2-4 Tablespoons of soap.) I use more but I like that ratio in my dispenser.
Start with less soap if you’re on a budget. My Castile soap bottles last me more than a year and I bathe the kids, make hand sanitizers and soaps and I have a toddler who thinks it is THRILLING to squirt soap for an hour in the bathtub. Literally. Oh what fun. I don’t mind, because it’s fun and it’s quite inexpensive for a toddler activity.
You can calculate how inexpensive it is compared to the store-bought varieties. While you’re at it, also look at the ingredients of those bad boys. Yikes! And think about how effective yours is going to be to fight germs this winter! I don’t know of any other natural antibacterial besides essential oils.
HOW TO SAVE MONEY USING FOAMING HAND SOAP DISPENSERS
